Tell 'em to use the serial number printed on it. It's usually in just a couple of places, maybe near where the neck connects, maybe up on the headstock, etc... That'll give 'em some certainty about what exactly it is. Then, you can start looking at condition and color - as color matters a lot.
A blond 1952 could be worth anywhere from 25k to 90k if it was owned by someone famous, all things considered. There's a wide variance in price. For that era, you'd want it to be blond - which was iconic at the time. If you have the original case that's even better. If you have the original paperwork with it, that's even more awesome.
Hmm... A '52 would have had a tweed case type of deal.
He says he will bring all his stuff over one of these days soon
He can also take pictures. (And get the serial number.) I'll likely ask for additional specific pictures.
I can accurately appraise it and let him know what the real value is, what the market is like, etc...
I have a blond 51, first year Tellie, that I got at a steal. I have all sorts of books and reference materials at the house, but I can't access them here of course. Still, I should be able to ballpark it assuming it's nothing terribly rare.
Hell, I won't even charge for the appraisal. I won't even pressure 'em into selling it. It's a potentially fairly valuable family heirloom.
He says he does not want to sell it. But he might be interested to know, he left now, but he will be in touch
