It is. Half of their audience probably didn't even notice though
As I recall, attendance actually dropped quite a bit for a while. This was about the time they were kinda fucked by yet another manager and were in dire financial straits. They proceeded to bust out a handful of pretty shitty albums and Jerry would check himself into rehab for a heroin addiction. He had a (and this is eighties dollars) a $700 a day habit. So, he did all sorts of other stupid jobs and gigs.
The history of the Grateful Dead is pretty interesting. There are a number of good books on the subject, but I recommend Planet Drum by Mickey Hart as a good starting point.
I know a friend who had a bunch of shrooms, like a whole trunkful and followed the dead around from show to show in the 80's. That's about the extent of my knowledge of the Dead's history
I've done two Dead tours, a long time ago. The first time I was just a minor. The second time I was on break for the summer. The first time, I sold t-shirts to fund my touring. The second time I had mostly enough money but sold LSD to augment what I did have.
I'd buy a ten strip for $25 and sell the tabs for $5 each. Sometimes other deals would come along and I'd sell whatever. But, the first time around it was paid for by t-shirts.
