They have hundreds of their own blogs.

Their goal was to get a link to their blog(s).

The more inbound links they have, the higher they rank in Google. The higher they rank in Google, the more traffic they get. The more traffic they get, the more ad revenue they get.

Links to other sites are expensive - with some sites charging 4 figures for a link, but most being $20 to $200 per link.
