That's a lot of energy. The thinking is that it doesn't take all that much energy - so long as we do so when it's far enough away.
One concept is to go up there and basically paint one side of the asteroid white. This will change the amount of photons that impart energy on it, moving it into a different trajectory.
They don't want to blow one up, but another idea is getting next to it and exploding a nuclear bomb.
If you blow it up, it's still gonna hit the earth with just as much energy but I don't quite understand that. If you blow it up well enough, they'll be smaller objects and have more surface area. So, a lot more of that material would be destroyed when it hits the earth's atmosphere.
I would have to assume changing the trajectory to miss the earth is a better option than breaking it up keeping the same trajectory
Yeah, but I figure we're not always going to have time for that. It takes time for the trajectory to change enough to avoid our gravity well. So, we might as well learn to blow 'em up as well. It takes all that mass and turns it into smaller bits of mass.
Like, can you lift a brick wall? Of course not. But, you can easily lift a brick.
We just need to ensure we smash it into small bits.
You'll probably survive being shot with birdshot. You are far less likely to survive if you're hit by a slug.
Yeah it would definitely limit the damages
