I am sure my hearing has been affected by years of loud music appreciation and enjoyment
I've been kinda good to my hearing. I get tested every two years and I'm doing okay. There are highs that I can't hear, 'cause of my age. Then, I've done some damage. I've had an ear infection that didn't get treated and it burst an eardrum. That actually healed fairly well. That's amazing, 'cause I didn't go to a doctor back then. (I only started hearing testing after I retired - mostly. The VA would do it once every five years, unless you needed it more often.)
I've been kinda good. I wear earplugs when I'm around loud noises that last long enough to hurt my hearing. I wear special ear pieces on stage. The earplugs I wear are not cheap, they're custom made for me based on the mold I created and sent back.
But...
I'm often around loud music and not doing as good as I could. I'm still a fucking rock star!
Hell yeah. I will wear ear plugs if I am around loud machinery. But not for music. I'm not deaf yet!!
I like to think I'd notice if I'm going deaf. I'd notice 'cause I'd constantly be asking 'what?' or asking people to repeat themselves.
That's why I got tested for colorblindness. I was arguing with people about the color of stuff. I noticed that I was doing so fairly often, sometimes for way longer than I should have, and so I finally went and got tested. It turns out, I'm partially colorblind, I have issues between the spectrum. Oranges may be yellow to me, or even the reverse. They might even be red. Fucked if I can tell the difference in dark blue colors, those all look black to me.
So, yeah... I'm partially colorblind. I went and got tested 'cause I noticed I was arguing a lot.
I had some apologies to give... Oops! LOL They were right the whole time and I'm just wrong. I can admit when I'm wrong. I can even learn from my mistakes!
Also, I don't tend to ask 'what?' or to ask people to repeat themselves unless it's legitimately very low volume. I can still hear volume, but the highs and extreme lows will be inaudible to me - or heard at a limited frequency as there are few pure tones out there.
