I would assume most of them are in a museum somewhere

A lot are in private hands. I dunno how many.

Also, a lot of 'em in museums are probably privately owned. They're often 'on loan' to the museum, which is great because they protect it, take care of it, preserve it, insure it, etc... It's often a win-win to loan a museum your art.

I suppose having a museum care for your rare and valuable artwork would probably alleviate a lot of fears of something happening to it
