How much do you wish to make as an initial investment in tools to learn to play?
What do you want to play for music?
I already own an esp ax, amp and a tuner. I'm willing to drop a few more hundred on a well rounded acoustic, but I've got at least a grand extra to play around with. I don't think my electric was a good idea for a beginner.
I'm wanting to play rock and metal. I enjoy Soldier of Fortune just as much as I do Powerslave to give you an idea.
I actually recommend people learn on an acoustic, as a general rule.
My first two suggestions would be to learn tab and get a 'chord bible.'

I immediately recommend an Ibanez, maybe an electric/acoustic combo. Any model will do - there are no 'unplayable' Ibanez. If you want higher quality, Yamaha is a good choice. Those can REALLY vary in price and you can get out of it for under $500.
I don't recommend spending a lot.
I wrote this - but it's not complete. It's a start, a stub, of what's going to someday be bigger and more detailed.

Thank you for the advice, Buddha, I'll start looking for an acoustic. I do think it will be easier on me.
