I knew he would eventually end up on your list, but I didn't know when.

As for the flight of the bumble bees, I can't verify what you heard, but he did release a version named Bite of the Mosquito with Jordan Rudess on their joint album An Evening with John Petrucci & Jordan Rudess. The album is live except for that one track.

Ah - I'll have to see if I can find a copy. Thanks! He's an excellent guitarist and a wonderful teacher, though I wish he'd do more of the teaching part as I can see how well it is done.

As for the Flight of the Bumblebees remark, it was based on the similarity with regards to a portion of what he was playing and the classical piece by that name. They're musically fairly similar, at least for a small part of the track (lasting about a minute, as I recall).

I take it you're a fan?

I've been listening to Dream Theater since Six Degrees of Inner Turbulance. I managed to see them live twice during the progressive nation tours. I had a buddy that is a guitarist that was heavy influenced by Petrucci and Dave Mustaine. That's how I learned of him.

I think I first heard of him in the Guitar World articles that he used to write. I've never seen him live, but that's just because I've not been close enough at the right time.

Do you play?

Nice read, never heard of John before this.

Yeah, it was a real treat getting to write this one. He's not very well known - and he should be. I got to expose people to a guitarist they're probably unfamiliar with and he truly is a master of the instrument.

Sadly, he's not even all that well known among guitarists. He really should be.

If you ever plan on playing guitar, the video at the end (the one I leave 'for the road') is absolutely a brilliant resource. Hell, it's a great resource even if you don't ever pick up a guitar. If I get time, I'm going to watch it with the eldest hoodlum - again this week. There's literally nothing in it that I can find fault with - and that's coming from a classical guitar background.

Remind me of this one once I finally get to pick up a guitar. Circumstances have disallowed me from getting one currently. As it turns out owning a home costs more than just the mortgage payment. Who knew? There is a bunch of stuff to fix. So my guitar fund had to go to fixing those things. However I'll get another job. Someday I can pick up playing.

One of these days, I'll do a list of "TheBuddha's List of Approved Guitar Teaching Aids."

It's actually on my list of shit to eventually get to.
