Those things are not really "sniper rifles" and at least about a decade ago you could buy them for cheap at gun shows but they would be covered in that grease/oil that is used to keep them from rusting.
A friend of mine had one and took me shooting one day with it. We had ammo from the same era too (yeah, some didn't fire but most did). That shit fired like a laser at 600 with iron sights. We broke a steel target at 400 after a hour of plinking at it. (It was probably low grade/thin but still).
Modified to remove the irons and to have a proper optic the thing would be a beast though.
Every lefty on a forum would brag about there’s. I’ve never shot one but have shot other more modern 30.06 rifles.
The grease is called Cosmoline, and dummies go straight to the range without cleaning or checking the barrel and a cosmoline barrel “blockage” can cause it to explode or the barrel to split like in the cartoons.
I only saw one from cosmoline, the other was from basic training and a private got their cleaning rod and brush stuck in the barrel, they got scared, unscrewed most of the rod sections and thought the next day at the range they could shoot out the wire barrel brush and the remaining part of the cleaning rod lol.
