The SA - Sports Badge (Hitler later renamed it to SA - Defense Badge) was a great award, as it was one of the few that you were awarded that were numbered on the rear, and they would take it back when you no longer qualified.
It could be worn along side the German Sports Badge. The badge was to be worn on the left breast, under the Iron Cross.
So if you were issued one by qualifying via a series of physical fitness tests and abilities, you had a motivation to keep fit and re-qualify, since the award was worn on your military uniform or personal dress clothing, and having it suddenly missing when you no longer passed would be embarrassing.
If they books hadn't been mostly lost or destroyed, if you have one today, you could actually see specifically who was awarded the one you now have in your collection by looking up the number on the rear.
