I've set off many of the fireworks the article mentions. Some of them are quite powerful. I don't think we should be pussies about them, but you do need to be responsible with storage and use. Most people are idiots who don't have a responsible bone in their body though.
A coworker recently mentioned that one of their aerial cakes flipped over and nearly caused some injuries/damage. Those fireworks are meant to be secured in place to prevent accidents.
A lot of folks still set of bottle rockets and roman candles from the hand, and young children are casually/carelessly given sparklers which are meant to be further from the body than their arms can reach.
