Historically, what was the purpose of 'You may now kiss the bride'?

What is being hinted at here?

I'm assuming that once you agree to be with someone in sickness and health, only then you may kiss since in the past they were aware of diseases being transferred by kissing. Just my take on it, it's not very clear what he meant.
