Ukraine was Europe and the middle east's chief grain supplier. The holodomor exterminated the most productive people in all of Ukraine. So severe was this decimation of the Ukrainian population that the bulk of Ukraine's and western Russia's farmland has remained fallow to this day and continues to be reclaimed by forest.
