you tell them how the Germans were absolutely dominating and not 1 foreign soldier had stepped foot on German soil,
It's amazing what people think about WWI. After the Bolsheviks revolved, all of those German and Austro-Hungarian troops got to take a ride west straight to the frontlines.
Battle-hardened, experienced, and massibe in number.
That's when Operation Kaiserschlacht was planned. Using the reinforcements, they were hell-bent on blasting their way through the British and French "meet-up point" separating the two armies and running straight to Amiens which was an extremely critical supply point.
Dürchbruchmüller (check my spelling there) commanded thousands and thousands of artillery guns. Not the gay little mortars, artillery guns and launched such a devastating barrage... Words can't do it justice. They could hear it from London, I've read.
Then the Sturmtruppen forced their way in right behind the tail end of that barrage. Those guys were very good at what they did. May as well have been the SS of WWI. Elite shock troops. Also the basis for Stormtroopers in Star Wars (Which are NOT the main infantry like so many think. The Empire has a regular army as well). :)
But yeah, Germany was totally losing guys.
It's why so many veterans of the Western front, Hitler included, felt so cheated. They knew they would outlast the British and French in a war of attrition. The Brits had made good use of tanks, sure, but the Germans simply answered with their field guns and K bullets as well as AT rifles and other interesting methods, like bundling multiple frags together. Of course, they built their own steel beasts (A7V... Very good looking tank.) but there were only 20 or so of them.
"The war was going well, but the communists rebelled."
Put that on a sign, because that's exactly what happened.
