Many of the Ashkenazi jews in Israel came from Eastern Europe. Let's not also forget that Stalin was the first leader to recognize Israel's as an 'independent' state and went out of his way to ensure that Israel would guarantee a win in the Arab-Israeli war. I'm pretty sure much of it found its way to Israel.
