Note the “archaic smile” seen in many greek sculptures from 600 - 480 BC, I call it psycho smile.

Reminder that the Spartans had a very specialized strategy of living parasitically of their fellow greeks, the enslaved helots, while focusing on their warrior culture. Spartans had many interesting traits but their values are not ours.

Minor niggle: The spartans neither claimed to be greek, nor were considered so by the greeks. Their origin story is that they invaded Laconia from abroad (probably somewhere around macedonia) and enslaved the helots. Then they picked fights with their neighbours until they held hegemony over the entire region.

Well foreign is relative, but Im reasonably sure they of hellenic origins as were the helots.
