The cheapest most shoddy materials are now the most preferred building material. Same with furniture. Instead of solid wood, it's now particleboard with veneer.
one solid scratch and that veneer comes right off like wallpaper. a 2 by board will either colapse in and absorb the scratch, split and disipate the energy, or shatter. anything above absorbing the scratch will shatter the particle board.
Also, one scratch and the particleboard seems to turn into a sponge, absorbing water, linseed oil, or most any liquid...then bulging out at that point. Even if you can keep the veneer unscratched, its still weak crap. I got a solid wood end-table that weighs a ton, but I can stand on it, dance on it, jump up and down on it, and my 175lb of blubber don't phase it in the least. Got a fake two-drawer thingie made of veneered particleboard, so light I can push it around with one hand, but try to put even a laser printer on it, and one of the drawers starts coming off track. Fake furniture!
