John Spekes of course is the (white) man who discovered the source of the Nile.

His journal can get frustrating at times, because he is constantly betrayed by the negroes he hired. He will write "last night, 10 contracted negroes abandoned our caravan and stole our food."

He was stated that negroes could be educated just like white people but he was convinced they are incapable moral behavior and thinking.

Although he might occasionally have a contractor flogged and tied for the night, he takes pride at treating his men well. He notes how other exploration leaders were murdered by his contractors for mistreating them.

Modern TV of course exhibits Africans as members of British royal families or part of Viking raiding parties.

Older generations were taught Africans were brave warrior types.

According to this journal, this is not accurate either. Rather than living like a primitive culture like the American Indians, the natives were living like scared animals. Spekes wrote that the majority of Africans were terrified of being captured by African slave traders so they built their homes in places that it was easy to run off and hide in the bushes whenever they sensed danger.

Spekes expressed frustration that whenever they would never see or meet the natives because they would always run away into the brush whenever their caravan came walking by.

Kind of refreshing reading candid observations with no fear of repressions.
