The British had spies.....

So did we.

Our spy network was better, mainly because we had a sort of "home field advantage".

For those that have not seen the show "Always Sunny in Philadelphia", in this episode, the gang recounts an absurd story about the origin of the crack of the Liberty Bell.

When the bar tenders find out there was a Declaration of Independence written up, they panicked, saying "We're going to want to be on the winning side right?", to which the other guy says "The British of course... I know! We need to draft a declaration of dependence and spy on the sons of liberty to earn the favor of the British!"

They inadvertently end up assisting the revolution by selling shoddy guns to the British, and through a comedy of errors, the British are defeated.
