Just to be clear, ballpoint pens were in fact available. But not commonly so and very unlikely to exist in a war torn country. Especially in the hands of someone hiding in an attic.

well yes they would...
but to state something as true, we first have to make the case that every other explanation is less reasonable, rather than it just being the version we like best.
