Where's Ireland?

[–] 6 pts

Probably still above 26 since 1890

its a myth that Irish drink a lot. the myth comes from the fact that back in the days in New york and other big cities, the irish were usually the lowest of the lower class and were they only ones who were not able to afford to pay for the bond after being arrested for being drunk. at the end of the night only irish would remain in jail while the germans, english and all other were already bailed out. irish people are pussies with their drinking.

They are in 8th place in Europe. The Irish drunk meme is mostly a myth.

Them and Russia. Those people drink way too much.

Dang France, looks like after WW1 a lot hit the bottle.

I think it correlates with some sort of "party like there's no tomorrow" kind of trend rather than some national nervous breakdown

But that doesn't explain the very odd inversely proportional ratio vs "rest of the world" circa 1920. It's a symmetry; france is as high as the rest is low

Maybe everybody came to france to drink during the 20s idk

Yeah probably a mix of partying it up and drowning out the horrors of WW1. That war would really suck to be in.

WWI was an abomination, literally a crossover between polo and rugby with machine guns and artillery

But then again look at the other actors of wwI, especially germany https://pic8.co/sh/6NXyTY.gif

I agree with Muslims on booze. It’s poison. It does nothing for you. Even on a drug by drug basis it sucks.

Ireland, Czechoslovakia, Russia and Poland are just a huge line at the top.

Could we please see Wisconsin as a country? Or just Milwaukee. K thanks

I wonder to what extend this is due to our aging population. Young people consume more alcohol than old people.

[–] 0 pt

Good point, didn't think of that

If no 1920 data, how is there a data point?

[–] 0 pt

Extrapolation derived from previous and next years I guess

Im gonna call bullshit, people are way bigger alcoholics today than the 80s. Hard alcohol wasnt even advertised on tv til the 90s. And look at how many types of alcohol and how prevelant it is today.

They used to give alcohol to babies in the 1900's Warnings about alcohol and pregnancy came much later on https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/alcoholic First attested 1891, from alcohol +‎ -ic.

The chart is liters of alcohol, babies were getting a pacifier wet with booze not chugging baby bottles of it.

People commonly binge drink on a regular basis these days. Women in particular drink way more than they used to.

I can think of two possible explanations:

Aging population. Young people binge drink, not the old ones.

And nerds who never leave their room. That's a recent development.
