Now for the exposure part, well, nazis didn't need help, they were quite obvious. And on top of that they managed to get ever larger swath of the local populations to hate them with terror tactics such as shooting up entire villages for the actions of a few. Taking a position/territory is one thing, occupying for a prolonged period of time is quite another exercise, it requires much more than mere military skills/tactics/strategies
If you take the US army and the invasion of iraq, episode 2, all went well during the invasion phase and not everybody was unhappy with the removal of saddam... It's during the occupation phase that shit really went sideways overtime, that's when it backfired bigly
You just described Vietnam as well. The Viet Cong basically utilized guerrilla warfare and won.
Even to the tiniest thing. My grandfather told me they noticed American soldiers liked kicking objects on the ground so they started hiding and in between American patrols they would place hundreds of empty objects that only had explosive items inside. Usually cans or boxes.

I don't think it's a great idea to solely rely on the military for occupation, casual intervention/projection is complicated enough, invasion is doable but occupation always comes with an endless trainload of hassles especially if you fail to rally the locals at your cause and it's almost always the case except when they were persecuted by the previous rulers for instance. But then you have to prove yourself better...
