A well fitted pair of waterproof shoes/boots can't be underestimated, when appropriate. Mostly boots, tho. Keep a spare change of shoes/boots in your vehicle. Preferably, next to a fresh change of clothes, socks and underwear, of course. People get opinionated about steel toes. Depends on the place you work and what you're working with. If it's too heavy, skip the steel. Firemen don't like cutting them off. Neither do medical workers. You won't mind the cutting part, you'll be too busy screaming or passed out.

My friend kicked a brick wall with his steal toed boots. The wall fell, landed of the steel toe, and promptly cut off two of his toes and damaged a third. Would have been better for him in any other boot/shoe.
