It should just be an option, and I think far down on the list, so it isn't immediately obvious.

Most text posts, specifically people posting questions or personal opinions, are almost always better without a distracting thumbnail, so you can just focus on the text at hand.

However, certain boring and gay posts, like ones about poetry or history, would do better with the ability to post an eye-catching thumbnail next to them.

How is that different from a normal post with an image? You can put as much text in the post content as you'd like.
