While the Geneva Conventions prohibit blockading and starving out civilians as a war tactic *in general*, Israel has two solid defenses: 1) Israel hasnt blockaded the Gaza Strip. It has just closed *Israel's* border with Gaza. Gaza shares a border with Egypt it can use to transport supplies. Egypt opened that border for a couple hundred trucks over the weekend so QED Gaza isnt blockaded by Geneva standards. 2) The Geneva Conventions place the onus of responsibility on the defender for alleged war crimes involving perfidy by the defender. Hamas ubiquitously engages in perfidy by disguising itself as civilians and initiating attacks from civilian protected structures (mosques, hospitals, etc). Ergo Israel can make a solid argument that the "civilians" who were waving Hamas flags and shooting at them ten minutes ago and the "civilians" who just happened to be born in the wrong spot are the same people until Hamas decides to put on a uniform and stop engaging in perfidy. For much the same reason you dont get to build a school inside an ammo dump and then scream "war crimes" when it's attacked. You use civilians as human shields, you're to blame if they die.
