I don't know the details on which they base the name "Ashkenazi". I learned of the distinction about 15 years ago and have since encountered it multiple times in various articles and videos. IMO it's an elephant in the room and I'm surprised to have seen so little discussion of it. The only conclusion I can draw from it is the same one you observe, so it IS significant.
