The thing is, it wasn't even a Norm MacDonald joke, it was a joke that existed long before he did.
Norm MacDonald's brilliance was in drawing out a dumb joke for as long as he possibly could, simultaneously infuriating the host, while making you question the long, and often maddening nature of build-up, so full of needless side characters and details, only to conclude with the most lackluster of punch lines, making you wonder if it was worth listening to all that set up for a for such a dumb joke.
But then you realize the pleasure was in the extraneous details, and you were getting pissed off waiting for some sort of punchline that never could have been that great, when the real hilarity was how stupid the journey was.
A perfect mirror of life.
