Nope, large publishing houses/ and third party marketing pre-order books which are then distributed to points of sale.
'monthly best seller lists' etc are actually predicated on how many books were 'ordered' by the publisher and not actual sales to the public.
Books in stores have already been paid for by the publisher - and the reason they are on the shelf is bc nobody is buying them.
