Actually, Android 2.3 (2011) allowed downgrading through APKs.

But since Android 3 or 4, if you update, you're trapped unless you are ready to delete all app data.

Also, adb tends to be unstable and buggy (at least more stable than MTP. MTP is pure deprecated trash. )

Today, I updated Google Chrome from v74 to v78, just to find out that they have removed:

  • Ability to deactivate the annoying pull-down-to-refresh trap through chrome://flags
  • Ability to use list-view in tab switcher (shows URLs and more items per page, and is a stamina list instead of wobbly cards).

And people wonder why some people are reluctant to install the latest updates.

I'd settle for being able to uninstall default apps 100% of the time w/o rooting a device. Oh linux phone... thou wast too pure for this wicked world... your release too early... and your availability negligible.

I just ignore the precluded apps I don't need (until maybe I need them).

But better than lacking features that I do need.

Is a good point. I do feel some "right to repair" law needs to be introduced for phones that allows users greater control and upgradability. Androids are all more or less proprietary linux. I just feel that people who truly wanted to help the environment would make it easier for users to maintain their phones longer. Planned obsolescence is bullshit and rooting a device is too difficult for the average user and not available quite often on less popular android models

Rooting isn't that a good idea it fucks android's security model right up the ass

Not that you risk to get fucked the minute after by all the chinese of the fbi, but it shouldn't be something you have to do in order to just use your phone the way you want
