I have a conspiracy theory that Reddit has become so neutered that the only "conspiracies" they're allowed to talk about is whether or not deli meat packers are deliberately trying to make people pull more meat out of the package than they meant to or if they're just kind of lazy and jaded to their job where they really don't give a shit how much you pull out of the package.

More than likely its to increase package volume. If you removed the space from the folding of the slices package size would decrease significantly while price would remain the same. Psychological reinforcement of value.

That or it's just easier from a mass production standpoint.
