From the post: "I’m thinking back to the early-American homesteading days when a man could venture into uncharted territory and make a simple life for himself. It seems like every square inch of Earth is owned by someone, but are there any places someone could still do this in modern times?"

I don't know if this is true or not, but I've heard Russia will give free land to people who want to homestead in Siberia. You just have to deal with short growing seasons, huge horsefly and mosquito populations, brutally long and cold winters, lack of service and utilities, and then of course having to fight off Russian bears and wolves. The wolves are known to form large packs with more than 100 individuals who will take on anything.

Yeah, ive read that too. Apparently it is true. It would be a damn hard life and your chance of a brutal painful death is high but it would be "free".
