I lurked there for years. Always loved the site and looked forward to checking main page and technology subs. Now it is locked behind a user login and not accepting registrations. Does it only do this to people behind a VPN or what? Voat has been effectively dead for me for month+. I figured it was some kind of gay-op/DDOS when it first went down... now I don't know.

Its down right now. I think they aim to kill it off. Why else would it be removed from view and new registrations closed?

Right now, and for some as-yet-to-be-determined time, Voat is closed to new users and lurkers. Whatever you post there is only going to be seen by other account holders. When that will change I do not know.
