Not Googling, just from memory, but IIRC the intense sexual tension and Kubrick's style of direction are said to have been the final nail in Cruise / Kidman's marriage. Plus the filming was excruciatingly long. There's a lot of fucked up stuff in that movie.
Love Kubrick though. He was truly gifted at film making and capturing a very certain type of human darkness.
If you have not seen his other films, they are all quite good.
Yeah, I read Kubrick intentionally sought an IRL-married couple, and then they had to sleep in the bed on-set, and at times he did things to make them jealous of one another (during the "cheating" scenes).
Would not surprise me at all. I know actors from the Shining also said it was a very rough experience working with him.
Dude has a specific vision and has the skills to get people to express that vision, regardless of the toll it takes on them. Genius, but cruel and possibly evil.
