It was a little too self-aware for it's audience. It doesn't allow a shallow interpretation. Unlike e.g. Commando, which can be an action movie to the kid or a comedy to the critic.

True. Tropic Thunder is like that too, several layers of action/comedy then philosophical commentary. I think Deadpool tried to do as well a little.
