I did know those still worked, don't they have a shelf life of like 10 years?

Common misconception, I have stuff from the late 70s that still shows good picture and sound. The professionally mastered high quality tapes will last forever, the shit bi-metal tapes people would buy to record things were shit. Also depends on the player used throughout the tapes life.
