The new Dune does a piss poor job of contextualizing things. Denis Villanueve just expects the audience to have read the books or seen the original 1984 Director's Cut version to have established people's back stories.
Rabban = Nobody even mentions his name or how critically important he was in being the steward/lord over Arrakis before the Atreides come to Arrakis to take over the planet. Duncan Idaho = Who is he? Why is he important? He's just seen as some friend/older brother character to Paul. Baron Vladimir Harkonnen = They do nothing to explain him, or how nasty House Harkonnen was. Guild Navigators = No background and no explanation
