The essence of the first Scream movie, was that there was a killer using a new technology. At the time, it was cellphones.
So the idea and the intro ,the Drew Barrymore scene, was not only amazing and mind blowing at the time, but literally revolutionary.
Not only she was speaking to a creep on the phone, but she was speaking to a creep on the phone, while this creep was in her own house.
Then moving forward, like you said, it was a fun movie. How do you know you are watching a fun movie?
Take out all of the plot, is it still pleasant? Then yes, its a fun movie. It would had been a good movie, even if there was no ghostface and murders.
The party scene is memorable and fun. The "I ll be right baaaaAAAAACK" scene reminds you of your friends.
Top this up with some deaths that are still cool (the garage door death) and a mystery with an awesome twist.
Who is the killer? Who is the killer? Everyone was trying to guess who the killer was, and EVERYONE was wrong, because there were two killers!
The new movies...are just a dude in a ghostface suit killing people. Who gives a shit? Does he use new technology? Probably...he posts on their social account? He has an instagram account? Who gives a shit? He hacks the heating system in their house and bakes them alive? Who gives a shit?
