just got done watching the new northman movie with my wife. this was the first movie i have been excited for in well over a year and it was horrible. like really really horrible. i like robert eggers a lot for his movie the witch which was very tastefully and stylistically done and the end scene where the goat is the devil was bone chillingly amazing. the northman stunk though. i got my wife to watch it who had no interest in it bc i told her it would be like a modern day braveheart but it fell way short of that. fighting scenes were alright, 90% of the movie is so dark you can barely see anything, there is a shitload of witchcraft, sorcery and spellcasting throughout the movie which i didn't expect. plus it just felt really dark and sinister and had a negative energy about it. the main character i really didn't care if he completed his journey or not bc he was just the dark mysterious raging brute not someone you could really relate to even though he was given the hero's journey he just never had anything to say besides ARGGHHHH!!!! when he was fighting. braveheart or gladiator i would call similiar movies but much better done bc in those movies the hero character was a badass but also had a vulnerability to them and might have a joke here or something interesting to say so you related with them. this guy in the northman just was a miserable downtrodden brute. really disappointed i was so excited for this movie.
oh yeah and the music was goofy to, everytime you would think there would be music it was just a guy humming oooohhhhhhhhhhh or a woman whispering a spell. really weird and dark vibes. now i am kind of questioning the robert eggers guy like he might be into some dark shit.
