He had a lot in common with Mark Twain as a satirist. Some of his stuff was certainly science fiction in the sense of plots relying on (as yet unavailable) technology, e.g. space travel in The Sirens of Titan (a favorite for the visuals) and Cats Cradle with Ice Nine.
