Sam Peckinpah helmed 1977 Cross of Iron.
Cast: James Coburn, James Mason, Maximilian Schell, David Warner
Part All Quiet On The Western Front, part Paths of Glory, part Storm of Steel, part Odessey. All Peckinpah.
Setting: The Wehrmacht retreat from the Ostfront.
Refreshing to watch a WWII flick with no mention of muh hollowcost and a portrayal of ze Germans, not as central casting caricatures, but as soldiers doing their level best duty in a fucked up situation. The film excoriates the senseless slaughter of the mother of all brother wars. Up the in-your-bloody-face Peckinpahian celluloid blood and guts ante. Raise with a bit of Homer just trying to get back home. Call with 2 hours of unwasted couch time.
