He was a Lieutenant ground grunt. He was on a hillside in Italy when he took a nasty direct hit from an unknown round- probably a large caliber MG bullet or mortar. It shredded his shoulder, collar bone, and damaged his spine. He was blasted apart and paralyzed; everyone thought he was a goner.
