There's this book I once read where the people of some town, this is set in some post-apocalypse era, who had reached a certain age or were sick and were wishing to "just end it all, now', would be given a task. A one way task. That would help that town become stronger. Such as taking out some rival or some enforcer or some leader from the other group. This way their death was useful.
Much like a story in one of the 'Last Whole Earth Catalog' editions, where hippies wanting to die were recruited into a secret society that provided the ways and means, but the person had to take out a target with him.
