The situation was so comical and awkward. Both me and the father had that nonverbal instant exchange. We both knew it was less awkward if I just waited for him to bring me gas but if I refused to get in she would be offended and if he argued against it she would scold him. She had us both on the spot. On the good side her kids were well behaved even if they couldn't stop staring.
