You got the gun from a locked cabinet that was owned by his guardian. Sounds to me like the guy didn't like his guardian and wanted to create a situation that took the guardianship away from him so the kid would have a different parent. That's my guess. Because he obviously wasn't trying to get away with stealing the money.
