This is why china has to flex now and try to achieve as many of their long-term regional goals (like reunification with Taiwan) as possible, while they still have a large population of military age males with no futures. Because in the very near future, those men will have aged out, the population will take a sudden nosedive, and if they haven't achieved those goals and stabilized them as the new reality going forward, they won't be able to do it in this century. It is this combination of fleeting opportunity and the fear of coming desperation that will drive their strategic actions.
