Yeah. It's a depressing place. As close to post-apoc as you'll probably ever find. It'll be interesting to see what happens in a decade. I have no idea how they'll overcome the toxic silt/dust issue that plagues the area. It's why Santa Ana winds always sucked in So Cal. Blew all that shit towards the ocean, would give you massive sinus and lung issues on top of headaches.
