When I lived in DTLA during COVID, our packages were chronically stolen from the lobby. As a street creature, I was always wandering around the neighborhood from coffee shop to coffee shop and monitoring the situation.

After awhile I noticed this young kid, probably like 12 or 13 years old, ostensibly selling candy for his school, but it was always out of a dirty broken box with a couple random candy bars in it.

One day, I caught him coming into our lobby, grabbing the door behind me and creeping in. I said asked what’re you doing here, this is private. And he started yelling and calling me a racist. I kept telling him he had to leave and he kept flinching at me like he was gonna hit me but he didn’t. He was very careful to not break any laws actually (besides tresspassing). He called me and my wife all kinds of names, but didn’t cross the line.

I just kept telling him he had to leave or I was calling the police, which I did. He left and I went upstairs, then came down like 15 minutes later. I went outside and I saw the kid crying, standing with two police officers. Oddly, he wasn’t alone. Suddenly he had his whole family with him, an obese mom and two or three other kids, even younger than him, and also “selling candy.” When they saw me they started yelling racism accusations, and the mom was also now crying, and the police were calming her and sort of glaring at me. I just waived and smiled and walked past them.

For months afterwards I still saw the kid creeping around the neighborhood trying to get into buildings. Weirdly I actually saw him also once in Hollywood, totally different area, prowling around with a larger group of kids about the same age. These are the ghosts who break into your cars and steal your bikes and packages who are never ever prosecuted or found. They have no fear of the police whatsoever, and are happy to even use the police to defend themselves against you.

Long story short, there are “families” whether related or not, who pose as innocent civilians while engaging in petty theft, who are taught to scream racism when caught. I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s what happened here.

This is not a five year old, and I’ve never heard of an autistic kid stealing. This is a little punk thief who got caught.
