Generations are not as simple as that.
There are 20 years in a major generation arc.
The last three years and first three years of two consecutive generations are a transitional sub gen. Then you have a 7 year "early" gen, followed by a seven year "late" gen.
Early genX was from 1963-1969 Late genX was from 1970-1976 The "last generation" is a subgen from 1977-1982. Early millennial was 83-90 Late millennial was 91-97
Etc.
These can be shortened or extended due to major world or cultural events, and are based on what the time and place you were 12-20 years old. Your major life shaping influences don't happen when you were born. They happen when you are a teen, and the influences that affected your older siblings, parents, and grandparents generations, as well as your urban density. Rural areas are slower to be influence newer things.

The past generation is a more fitting term. Xennials is stupid. It was the past generation to grow up in an information seeking society vs an information flooded society.
