As always, I recommend diving into AA. But its effectiveness basically hinges on your ability to believe in a God of some sort.
The issue is that alcohol is seldom the actual problem. It's usually what we're using to medicate the problem. I had a lot of emotional/psychological development to go through before I could honestly be "Happy, joyous and free" in sobriety. But it's worth it.
