I didn't get that the writer encouraged mob rule at all. In fact, most of this article is well written and on point.
Democracies do devolve into mob rule and that is not desirable. A slight majority making choices for a slight minority splits a nation along lines that can rarely be healed and only leads to unrest and eventually violence.
It notes the constitution as a good start, forcing everyone to play by the same rules, but that only works as long as we follow those rules. Once special interest groups take over and convince enough people to doubt the rules we've all been playing by, there's no going back.
There has never been a true democracy that has survived, just like a socialism based government. The US is no longer a Republic and has not been for a long time. We are a Corporate Oligarchy, soon to have added socialism and then it's all down hill to communism.
